Rashmi Agarwal - Fine Silk Artist
Qatar is buzzing with a lot of talent these days and we found a hidden mentor of Fine Silk Art. She is not only a charismatic, passionate down to earth prominent artist, but also a facilitator for budding artists. Meet the popular fine silk artist Rashmi Agarwal who has gone an extra mile of creating a platform for the professional as well as amateur artists to enhance their passion and career.
Time to sip a cup of tea or coffee and read on that chit chat we had with Rashmi!
When and where did your journey of Art begin?
Art was always my passion. Even after my management and law degree, I was enthusiastic about Art. I took Art as a profession in 2005 while I was still working.
How do you get inspired to do a project?
I can't live without painting. It soothes me like meditation and gives me energy.
When you came to Qatar in 2004 what was prevailing of Fine Silk Art here? Was it existing?
In 2004, when I began my silk painting, there were only a handful of silk artists in Qatar. Hardly anyone knew about fine silk art. So, I was determined to initiate silk painting as a professional art in Qatar and other GCC countries. When I started introducing it became very popular within a short period of time because of its beauty and elegance. Fine Silk Art is now known for wall hanging, home Decor and also for wearables.
Are you having a fulltime career other than being an Artist?
I worked as an Executive Officer for a Water & Waste Management company but my passion towards Fine Silk Painting took me to do this professionally as a full time Artist.
What are the organizations and places you are working with or volunteering for with regard to Art?
I am currently a board member of USA- SPIN and Community Instructor at VCU, Qatar. I am also working at Souq Waqif Art Centre. I run my own Art Studio, while trying to develop many art courses/workshops and exhibition as the President and Founder of MAPS Qatar.
Qatar is a country with a rich culture. It has a lots of potential for art. It is one of the most beautiful countries that provides many platforms for budding and professional artists to pursue their dreams. There are many people with hidden talents, I am facilitating them an engaging arena to expose their capabilities in art.
What has MAPS achieved so far?
MAPS is really fulfilling many people's dreams and nourishing their career. It is providing large scale Exhibitions and also many forms of art workshops and classes for everyone, building their confidence and self esteem.
Initially we had only few members but currently we are more than 65 members just within few months. It's one of the best achievements any community can be proud of.
What are you working on right now?
I am trying to establish different art workshops and courses for beginners as well as professionals for both elders and kids with their art exposure in Exhibitions. In fact we have now started casual classes at Katara Cultural Village on many techniques and all are welcome to join and benefit. MAPS facebook page has all information about our activities.
What is the support you get from your family in pursuing your passion and community work?
Family Support is my biggest asset to achieve this success.without their support, I could not have come this far.
Our thanks to Rashmi for taking the time to talk to us in spite of her busy schedules and we wish her all the best.
All details about Rashmi and MAPS can be found at www.rush360.qa by searching for Rashmi or Artist or MAPS.

MarieArt - Mom & Daughter crafting together!
Cherishing the love, Strengthening the bond, enjoying the
companionship, enhancing the skills through crafting, a mother and daughter
inspiring the handmade community in Qatar. Meet Cristina Alves and her 13 year old daughter Marie Alves sharing their love of crafting together!
Cristina started to show interest in crafting when she saw her cousin in Portugal making
handmade products. This made her look into crafts and she started learning from from books, vÃdeos and people who are experts and started crafting 8 years ago.
At the beginning it was a trial and error experience, and all projects did not turn out successful, but as she started practicing with patience and perseverance she improved her skills and became better each day.
Today MarieArt Collections is a her little business with different variety of handmade products. All details about MarieArt could be found at www.rush360.qa by seraching for "MarieArt" or Handmade.
She loves to crochet more than anything else and brings out some lovely creative products! Her products vary and she accepts orders for personalized items as well. Like her facebook page and keep up to date with her creativity and ideas.
Cristina and her family have been living in Qatar since 2013. When she shifted to Qatar she did not know from where to get her craft supplies, hence got down all her supplies from Portugal.
Christina's daughter Marie who is a grade 8 student of Al Hekma International School in Mamourah is sharing her passion of crafting with love! Marie learns from her mom as well as does her own research and spends her time making little bracelets, necklaces and dream catchers!
MarieArt Collections are made with affectionate hands using recycle materials as Cristina says "You can do anything when it comes to recycled materials, you just need a bit of imagination!"
Cristina is hoping that one day she would have her own space to sell her products and at the same time teach children handcraft skills.
We asked Cristina and Marie to share something with our readers.
"l would just like to say that l do know that chatting with your friends all day seems way more interesting than making handcrafted products, but to be honest l manage to do both at the same time. Just because you do handcrafts or any other kind of thing does not mean that you have to spend all your free time on it. Everything should be done with moderation and this also applies to any hobby you have"
Cristina
"Handcraft is pretty fun and l think all kids should try at least once in their lifetime as minors and not adults. So just think about it and search anything on the internet and just try to make it".
Marie
Next time, you need some gifts for your loved ones or when you feel like redecorating your home or just get that craze of owning something that is handmade with affection remember Cristina and Marie and give them that encouragement, support and satisfaction of appreciating their creativity by placing an order with them and buying their products!
Our sincere thanks to Cristina and Marie for sharing their passion and journey with us and we wish them success in their endeavour.
Qatar Book Corner - Giving a new purpose for used books!
View this post also here
Guess what Rush360 Team discovered here in Qatar! Yes a virtual online second hand used Book Store! Browse the collection from the comfort of your home, order online and get them delivered to your door step!
All details about Qatar Book Corner can be found at www.rush360.qa by searching for Books, Qatar Book Corner or used books.
Qatar Book Corner was established in 2012 by a book loving couple! Akif and Fariha say, they initiated such a project in Qatar due to the lack of affordable and variety of books in the market and the desire to help people de clutter and make room for more books. Books are not easy to part with, however the fact that they will be taken care of and given into the right hands provides much of a relief and makes the separation easier !
How does this work?
- They buy used books from the existing market and sell them off at very reasonable rates
- Their website is their online store for the clients to browse through with ease and in the comfort of their homes.
- Orders are placed online however for the comfort and security concerns of the customers payments are collected in cash upon delivery/collection.
Delivery
- An order of 5 books or more is delivered free of cost within city limits (Doha, Wakra, Gharaffa area)
- An order of less than 5 books needs to be collected from the collection points in Doha or Wakrah. These books can also be delivered at a flat rate of QAR 15/-
- Qatar Book Corner is open to shipping worldwide. They even recently received an order from UK from a client who had been searching for a book all over the globe. They are flexible on that, however shipping costs are payable by the client.
Now doesn't that sound so wonderful!
- All sorts of books of various genres. Both fiction and non-fiction, for adults, young adults and children.
- All books are used. Their price reflects their overall quality. However, they do not sell books that are in extremely bad shaped (torn /missing pages)
Selling your Used Books
Do you have used books that you do not need any more!? Qatar Book Corner will take care of those books.
They buy books in bulk from people leaving the country or just about anyone who needs to make room for more, provided they have available space for more books.
Clients send them their requests for selling their lot and their estimated price. After arriving at a mutually agreed rate, Qatar Book Corner visits them to view the quality and selection of books.
They make sure the books they buy are of good quality. And they currently do not buy coursework books (for schools and colleges).
So we asked Fariha, "It’s very difficult to get good books in Qatar and we do not have that very much of libraries and your services sound so appropriate for this country. How is your feedback. Do you have a good amount of customers. What kind of books go well with your customers? She replied,
"We are existent mainly because of the love of our clients. We have a tremendous feedback from them and 80% are returning customers. Our "little" business wouldn't stand a chance without these book loving people.
All books go well , as we have a range of all type of customers of different interests and age groups."
"We hope to expand to a proper bookstore in the future provided we get a suitable opportunity. We are not looking to hike up our book prices, which would be the case if we owned a bookstore now. Our low and unbeatable prices are the main reason why this initiative actually works well! Customer satisfaction is our policy and we are open to suggestions and feedback"
You can check out their large collection of books at the MIA Bazar as well!
The online Store is pretty much user friendly and browsing is easy as it is well organized with sorting options.
So next time you need a book remember to use Qatar Book Corner from the comfort of your homes!
We thank Fariha and Akif for providing us details about Qatar Book Corner to share with all of you and we wish them all the best with their much needed initiative!
