VCU Community Classes - Silk Painting - Rashmi Agarwal


Famous fine silk artist Rashmi Agarwal will be conducting Silk Painting Classes at VCUQatar

Participants must buy their own materials and bring along. Payment can be made online here or visit the VCUQatar shop for in-person registration.

Course participants will learn basic and more advanced Silk Painting techniques, i.e. various stop flow methods, 'Serti' technique using water based resists and gutta, wax effect, free flow techniques, and embellishing works with salt crystals.

Class Outline

  • Stretching the silk on adjustable frame, use of pencil lightly for drawing design onto the silk and applying resist on silk
  • Apply of Silk paints and use of salt technique and wet on wet technique effect
  • Removal of salts, fixing paints, washing and ironing
  • Start of new painting with another technique, i.e. Stop-flow, or No-flow primers technique and also white blending effect technique
  • Use of wax technique including Batik
  • Removal of wax for all and fixing wax designs with heat and Introduction of silk craft with silk pencil colour bar.
  • Completion of silk craft item and start of new painting it with clear resist technique and no flow.
  • Clearing and completion of clear resist painting and theory notes and certificate distribution

Fashion Design Portfolio - for high school students: ages 15 and above - 5th July

In this course, students learn how to build a dynamic fashion portfolio.

Students will be introduced to creating a basic portfolio of fashion design work, including a mood-board (showing color palettes, fabrics, and fashion design ideas), design concept development, working drawings, and final Illustrations.

Students will have an opportunity to explore various aspects of fashion design, not only the art and design fields including drawing, painting, and design, but also different professional areas, such as history, socio-economics, and culture.

  • Brief introduction to the fashion design development process, major materials, and professional terminologies. Discuss goals and experiences of students. Look at portfolio samples. Research trends such as color, mood, trends, and materials (Computer lab: Organize drop box folders). Start a fashion mood board reflecting research, inspiration, and concept (Various magazines). Introduction to fashion croquis with different mediums such as markers, pens, ink, watercolor and gouache. (Visit Fashion Design Department at VCUQatar and tour around different major departments). Practice line drawing with fine liner pens and markers
  • Fashion mood board continued: select color palette, prints, materials, and silhouette (collage). Introduce different art and design elements such as lines, values, and color followed by observational drawing on shapes or forms like boxes, cylinders, sphere, and cones which are the basic to understand body parts (Perspective).
  • Identify prospective customers along with market trend research. Finalize the fashion mood board. Brief introduction to Fashion History (Art and Design History). Fashion Illustration with Goauche painting and color pencils (Values, fabric folds, texuture, prints, and details)
  • Discuss design development process and fashion croquis look book. Begin with simple design sketches (Markers). Fashion figure rendering with watercolor painting (Color theory)
  • Brief introduction to Fashion Illustration History. Fashion illustration with ink and charcoal (Fabric folds varying values). Non-conventional fashion design approach (Opportunity of exploring mixed media). Select favorite designs that are cohesive for your portfolio and also for the look book
  • Brief introduction to layout and flow and discuss about compositions in art and design (Computer lab). Tips for documentation (Sketching, Photography or Scan). Design prints for textiles that can also be incorporated with promotional tools with drawing, painting, and cut outs. Creative fashion design and making with chosen themes and resources (Collaboration project in groups)
  • Creative fashion design continued and making (Experience garment construction on mannequins). Edit fashion portfolio in its layout and flow. Brainstorming on window display with a chosen theme (Collaboration project groups). (HW: Bring some props to add to your window display)
  • Window display project continued: Design logo and business card with developed prints. Finalize promotional croquis look book
  • Work on fashion illustration for chosen designs and complete the portfolio (Computer lab)
  • Presentation followed by critique. Prepare for the exhibition.

This one-week course offers an introduction to different methods of printmaking and collage.

Using traditional and non-traditional materials, we will explore a variety of different materials.  We will experiment with paper marbling, nature prints, sun prints, and mixed media projects.  Students will use their collages to create a pop-up art work as well as a mixed media piece.

This three-week course offers an introduction to art and design through the exploration of multiple media that may include painting, drawing, printing, mixed media, sculpture, dyeing, computer graphics and photography.

Daily creative exercises and activities will help build skills in these areas and provide a general overview of the various design fields: fashion design, graphics, interiors as well as painting and printmaking and art history.

Museum and gallery visits along with presentations by practicing artists will offer new ways to understand and look at art and related disciplines. The class will culminate with an exhibit of student work to be shared with family and friends.

Class will focus on basic, beginner level fashion garment construction, pattern cutting and developing various models based on the basic skirt pattern.

Students will also construct a basic shirt pattern. Individual skirts will be developed with study about draping ability of textiles, body figures and basic fundamentals of design garment making. Other fabric treatments like ruffles, tucks, pleats, finishing treatments and many more are included. Introduction to drawing using pencil, ink and coloured pencils. This short course will teach students how to measure and draw accurately. They will learn pencil drawing techniques and produce a final art piece in coloured crayons.

  • Students will be introduced to basic measuring skills - how to measure and object. They will all draw a line drawing of an object.
  • Students will do a variety of sketching techniques using measurement, 20 min sketches
  • Students will draw a group of objects together and set up a still life. They will be shown how to use tone and shade
  • Students will complete a still life set up and shade it using pencils
  • Students will use various mark making techniques, cross hatching to try shading. They will look at light and shade
  • Students will be shown how to use coloured crayons and inks . They will practice  colour techniques on paper
  • Students will arrange a still life set up to do for coloured pencil crayon piece , they will start the still life
  • Students will add details to the art work, using in tones and mark making.

Instantly gratifying, the class will work with mediums that cultivate free and energetic artwork. This process readily lends itself to capturing the cultural and environmental pulses of Qatar, to which each student responds to in a unique way.

The class will practice various techniques and draw inspiration from regional and contemporary artists. Students will draw and paint from observation and personal photographic references with time to reflect and critique.

Fashion design - day wear / evening wear - VCU Qatar - April

VCUQatar is offering Fashion design - day wear / evening wear classes. Participants must buy their own materials and bring along. Payment can be made online here or visit the VCUQatar shop for in-person registration.

Experience and learn the live process of a designer collection development from sketching and draping on croqui, putting down the ideas, drawing 2D fashion flats, selecting the respective textiles, consulting with color techniques, design developed from one thought inspiration and draping on mannequin for selected and consulted designs in the class. Finally developing the design with Fashion Dressmaking processes into your own signature collection of one or two dresses.

The class will be a mix of workshop and lecture series and the students will then design and develop their collections with expertise guidance to a final fashion design production of an evening wear/day wear. The students will finally exhibit their final design collection on the mannequins.
(For the production of the final dress in the class, there will be limited patterns and dress styles available, the designs will be consulted and approved by the instructor to be produced in the class. No Bridal Wears nor Trousers will be involved in designing and production process)
Class is open for everyone from beginners with no sewing experience. There will be slight variations at the production process and selection of textiles of the final designs for the beginner levels which will be consulted by the Instructor in the classes.

Students/ Participants will explore and create their own origami bag or clutch design beginning from research, conceptualization, visual representation through sketches, mood boards and create paper as well as draft fabric sample before they create and present their final piece.

The outcome will be some exciting functioning origami bag/clutch designs that you can own!

Students will learn the conceptualization and visualization of their item, as well as go through the process of making it. By the end of this course, students will not only learn how to create a bag/clutch design (pattern making, cutting & sewing the bag), but also capture the process involved in designing and creating, as well as visually marketing any product.

This course will teach you how to analyze art motives to create a pattern of your own style.

You can create a relatively simple continuous pattern using easy methods to apply the pattern as a fill to an object or special area like wall hangings, frames, wallpapers, carpets, papers as well as tile work. You will also learn several interesting coloring techniques.

Paper Art is an intriguing form of art created by cutting paper with a magical twist!

Paper is a very flexible and expressive medium for creative artworks. You will explore different, free, and geometrical shapes to create illusion paper art by way of cutting, painting, layering and folding papers. Triangles, polygons, curves and free forms develop their own colorful life on your individual art pieces.
