Design Intensive - for high school students: ages 16 and above - 28th June

Learn new skills, gain new insights  and make new friends during your holidays while attending the VCUQatar Summer Camps for Children and High School Students.

Participants must buy their own materials and bring along. Payment can be made online here or visit the VCUQatar shop for in-person registration.

This three-week course offers an introduction to art and design through the exploration of multiple media that may include painting, drawing, printing, mixed media, sculpture, dyeing, computer graphics and photography.

Daily creative exercises and activities will help build skills in these areas and provide a general overview of the various design fields: fashion design, graphics, interiors as well as painting and printmaking and art history.

Museum and gallery visits along with presentations by practicing artists will offer new ways to understand and look at art and related disciplines. The class will culminate with an exhibit of student work to be shared with family and friends.

Lessons: 15 (over 3 weeks)
Days: Sunday to Thursday
Time: 9am to 1.15pm (15-minute break at 11am, no lunch provided)

Class Outline

Please note that this course outline is flexible and may change according to needs and schedules:

  • Course Overview and introduction to drawing techniques
  • Introduction to composition/photography. Photo-scavenger hunt, computer lab
  • Gallery Visit, creative journaling , collage
  • Drawing, creative journaling, grounds and approaches
  • Introduction to printmaking, making plates - (linoluem, gellie or collagraph)
  • Printing on various surfaces and extension print.
  • Extension Print work and Mixed Media
  • Museum Visit - introduction to perspective drawing and Interiors
  • Trunk Show - Introduction to Fashion
  • Fashion, figures and folds
  • 3-D/ Surface Design, Studio visits
  • Film and Art, Screening - Fashion project
  • Graphic design: Artist cards
  • Work day
  • Prepare and hang works, Final Exhibition, Certificate ceremony
