Turkish Embroidery & Embellishment - February

VCUQatar is offering Turkish Embroidery & Embellishment classes this spring. Participants must buy their own materials and bring along. Payment can be made online here or visit the VCUQatar shop in-person registration.

In this class, you will learn about the basics of Turkish Embroidery, which has all the characteristics of fine art.

Turkish Embroidery can be used in daily life at every level of society - for men’s and women’s garments, i.e. robes, kaftans, underclothing, a variety of decorated scarf, shawl, waist coat, cape, handkerchiefs.

However, the most striking examples of Turkish Embroidery can be found within the soft furnishing of any house, i.e. on cushion covers, wall and door curtains, hand towels, cloth coverings, purses, bags, pillows, frames, boxes, etc. In this class you will learn the art of Turkish embroidery and embellishment.

Class Outline 
  • Basic Embroidery stitch – stem-, back-, chain-, bullion- and daisy-stitch, colonial knot
  • The count work ( hesap işi)
  • Turkish embroidery (türk işi)
  • Openwork embroidery (ajurlar) – lentil-, spider web-, ladder hem-, padded-, satin- stich, needle weaving, cut work
  • Cross stitch (kanavi çe)
  • Maraş work embroidery (golden thread satin stitch)
  • Antep work embroidery (ladder hem stitch)
  • Suzeni embroidery
