VCUQatar is offering The Art of Hat Making classes this spring. Participants must buy their own materials and bring along. Payment can be made online here or visit the VCUQatar shop in-person registration.

This course introduces the students to the classic craft of hat making known as millinery. The students will get an overview of the design process and work on creating two finished hats. The course will cover various different materials and techniques used in the creation of hats as well as emphasis professional quality finishing. This is a studio-based course. Prior knowledge of fashion and sewing is beneficial but not a pre-requisite.

End: Wed, 1 Apr, 2015

Lessons: 7, no classes on March 4th and 11th

Days: Wednesdays

Time: 5pm - 7pm

Class Outline 

• Introduction to Millinery and its tools and equipment. Getting the molds ready for blocking. 
• Start blocking the first felt hat.
• Finish blocking of hat. Start working on the final finishing. Research on trims and materials for accessorizing.
• Completion of Felt Hat
• Introduction to straw hats - Basic Straw Blocking.
• Continue work and complete the Straw Hat with trims and other finishes.
• Final Presentation of 2 hats and critique.
