VCUQatar is offering Oil Painting Basics classes this
spring. Participants must buy their own materials and bring along. Payment can
be made online here or visit the VCUQatar shop in-person registration.

Working from life observation, the goal of the class is for
students to hone their perceptual skills and leave with a new understanding of
light and color.
Students will be introduced to the materials and techniques
of oil painting at a beginning level, however those with previous painting
experience are welcome to attend.

Class Outline
- Introduction to materials. Color lecture and color-mixing exercise on small panel.
- Simple object painting. Attempt to depict lit and shadowed planes, paying attention to reflected light and color.
- Complete simple object painting.
- Lecture on underpainting and artist examples. Prepare large canvas with color ground and begin underpainting.
- Demo: glazing and layering color.
- Work day.
- Work day.
- Complete final painting.
