Shibori is an art invented by the Japanese. Rather than treating cloth as a two-dimensional flat surface, shibori techniques give it a three-dimensional form by folding, crumpling, stitching, plaiting, or plucking and twisting.

VCUQatar is
offering Shibori Silk Dyeing classes this spring. Participants must buy their
own materials and bring along. Payment can be made online here or visit the VCUQatar shop in-person registration.

Beginners
will learn how to do various Japanese Fabric Resist Dyeing Techniques on silk
materials, and how to mix and layer colors using MX fiber reactive dyes.

- Preparing fabrics for dyeing. Mixing, soaking and dyeing first colors.
- Soaking and dyeing second color on two pieces. Shibori slide presentation. Preparing two more pieces for resist dyeing in different techniques, such as pole wrapping, clamping, tying, stitching etc.
- Soaking and dyeing third color layer. Preparing two more pieces for dyeing.
- Soaking and dyeing fourth and final layer of color.
